Crossing Borders Studio Tour 2011 Artist LJ Ronning

LJ Ronning

Larry Ronning is a boatbuilder/woodworker from the Knife River/ Two Harbors area. His restoration projects have included boats from the Lief Erickson Viking Ship in Duluth, to the Isle at the Tofte Fishing Museum. His building log includes 34 new boats from the late 70's to present.

"I was messing about in boats for as long as I can remember, when growing up next to water in NE. Minnesota that’s not unusual. It was my great uncles and grandfather working as boatbuilders and fishermen who inspired me to continue there heritage. My immersion was a boatyard in 1974 where I learned the patience needed to develop a skill. The first lapstrake boat was built in 1979, I then worked full-time in the craft beginning in 1985.

Much of my material has been hand cut out of our NE Minn. woods, providing quality straight grained, defect free lumber, which is then used in designs that have been proven for a hundred years or more. I use modern approaches when necessary, particularly in glues and finishes to facilitate longevity and practicality.

Wooden boxes and benches are a sideline and delight to create, look for an interesting display of both.
